Before you plug your RV into shore power, it’s worth taking a minute to verify the pedestal with a multimeter. Whether you’re at a campground, RV park, rally, or borrowing power from someone else, a quick check can help you avoid plugging into a potentially unsafe outlet.
In this Two-Minute Tech Tip, Todd from Big Beard Battery walks through the basics of checking 20 amp, 30 amp, and 50 amp RV pedestal outlets.
Know Your Hot, Neutral, and Ground
On a standard 20 amp outlet, the smaller slot is hot, the larger slot is neutral, and the round opening is ground. In the RV world, outlets are often oriented with the ground up, even though household outlets are commonly installed with the ground down
.
For a 30 amp RV outlet with the ground positioned at the top, the left side is hot and the right side is neutral. You should see power between hot and neutral, and also between hot and ground. You should not see power between neutral and ground.
A 50 amp RV outlet is a little different. With the ground up, the left and right sides are both hot legs, while the bottom slot is neutral. You should typically see around 120 volts from each hot leg to neutral. Between the two hot legs, you may see either 240 volts or 208 volts, depending on the RV park’s electrical setup.
The Big Safety Check
One of the most important tests is checking between neutral and ground. On 20 amp, 30 amp, and 50 amp service, you should not see significant voltage between neutral and ground.
If you see high volts between neutral and ground, do not plug your RV into that pedestal. That is a serious red flag and could indicate an unsafe wiring issue.
Take a Minute Before You Plug In
Testing a pedestal with a multimeter only takes a moment, but it can help protect your RV’s electrical system before you connect to shore power.
