Can You Charge a 24V RV System From a 12V Truck?

If your truck runs on 12 volts but your RV has a 24-volt battery system, it is natural to wonder whether the two systems can safely work together. The question usually comes up when RV owners want to use a DC-to-DC converter to charge their RV battery bank while driving.

The good news is yes, a 12V truck can be connected to a 24V RV system through the right DC-to-DC charging setup.

A DC-to-DC converter allows you to take power from your truck’s alternator and use it to help charge your RV’s battery bank while you travel. This can be an advantage for RVers who spend long hours on the road and want to put that drive time to work, especially if they have a large lithium battery bank or RV solar system.

The part that confuses people is the shared frame or ground connection. In a proper setup, the truck frame and trailer frame are connected so they act as one frame. But what happens when the truck is 12V and the RV system is 24V?

They do not mix.

Even though the systems may share the same negative or frame ground, the positive circuits remain separate. Electricity returns to its source, so the 24V side does not travel through the negative side and suddenly end up in the truck’s 12V battery. Likewise, the truck’s 12V system does not become part of the RV’s 24V battery bank.

This is also why many RVs can have more than one voltage system. For example, you might have a 24V lithium battery bank running your inverter and 120V loads, while still keeping the original 12V system for factory RV components or generator starting. They can share ground without sharing the same positive circuit.

When installed correctly, a 12V truck and a 24V RV power system can safely work together.
